Cloud computing and the return of the platform wars | Enterprise Web 2.0 | ZDNet.com. Cloud computing is arriving on the scene in a big way this year and the next platform wars have begun. Sun's move to offer service using Amazon's APIs shows that there is some early coalescing around de facto interoperability. The big question is whether businesses will go after what is sizing up to be a $42 billion dollar industry by 2012.

Is There a GTY Gene?

Steve Farber

In response to LeadingBlog’s call for GTY stories, Chip Nuttall posted this wonderful comment in which he expands the scope of potential for the Greater Than Yourself endeavor. And he wonders if he may be carrying a GTY gene passed down from his late grandfather. Read on: “In a nutshell, it’s all about ‘they’ stories. All too often, you hear ‘leaders’ tell ‘I’ stories.

Now serving - Message Queuing in Web Applications

Ruminations of a Programmer

Looks like asynchronous messaging is becoming quite a common paradigm of distribution in Web applications and large Web sites. The general theory is to do the absolutely essential user requirement stuff as part of the synchronous HTTP request/response cycle. And delegate the rest offline for the asynchronous queuing service to process. This leads to faster page reloads, optimal resource utilization and much better user experience.

The Agile PMO: Automating Metrics Capture

The Agile Manager

The last piece of the Agile PMO puzzle is to make the data needs of the PMO non-burdensome to delivery teams. It’s all well and good to be able to get quality and performance data, but it has to be easily accessible. If it isn't, we're just taxing the teams that much more. That means we won't get this data timely or efficiently, if at all. Automating Metrics Capture Because they're derived directly from the asset under development, our metrics give us an objective way to index and monitor qualit

But this one was different: Technology is dominated by two types of people: those who understand what they do not manage, and those who manage what they do not understand. — Archibald Putt (a pseudonym). It turns out this quote is known as Putt’s Law and was first published in Research/Development magazine in 1976 (yes, before my time in high tech).

Learning Haskell - Laziness makes you think differently

Ruminations of a Programmer

Haskell is pervasively lazy, lazy-by-default, unless otherwise forced to be strict. Now this is a big change from where I am coming. Java, well, nothing lazy to write home about. There are some constructs that are lazy by default, but does not support any user defined operation to be lazy. Scala offers a call by name semantics along with a nice syntactic sugar that allows creation of user defined control structures that look like built-in ones.
