Startup Software Development – Do Your Homework Before You Develop Anything

SoCal CTO

I just had an all-too common conversation with the founder of a startup who had spent more than a year working with a software development company who had produced a mess. The mess really comes from a developer who was willing to get started on a product that was not fully thought out. I always take a very different approach in early conversations. If I’m being asked to do startup software development, I’m going to push fairly hard on key questions that the startup needs to have answered before

Why Programmers Suck

Code Simplicity

A long time ago, I wrote an essay called “Why Computers Suck” (it was given the title “Computers” and “ What’s Wrong With Computers ” in two later revisions, and the original title never saw the light of day). The article was fairly long, but it basically came down to the idea that computers suck because programmers create crazy complicated stuff that nobody else can understand, and complexity builds on complexity until every aspect of a program becomes

A Very Large Structure

The Programmer's Paradox

You'd think I'd learn. You really would. I've posted a number of entries about issues with ZFC set theory, all of which, through the patient help of a number of readers, have proven to not live up to their expectations. As it stands, nothing I've said so far has shown any real problems within set theory. ZFC set theory has proven itself durable, and although I find some non-intuitive attributes to the formal system, it has proven itself consistent.

Privacy, Simplified

Code Simplicity

So, there’s a lot of talk on the Internet about privacy. Some people say that privacy is only desired by those who have something to hide. Some people insist that privacy is a human right that should never be violated without consent. There’s only one problem with this whole debate: what is privacy, and why would anybody want it? This is rarely defined–most people just seem to assume that “everybody knows” that privacy is, so why would it have to be explained?

Crank it Up

The Programmer's Paradox

Well, that's mostly true, but mankind has a vast amount of learning left to do. Picture a spreadsheet, but it's no ordinary spreadsheet. To the left and to the right it extends out infinity.
