Entreprenuer Questions

SoCal CTO

Chris Gammil and I just spent some quality time together with a new, private group that is advising start-ups here in Los Angeles. The goal is to have start-ups learn from each other and from others who have been through the experience. So, far it's turning out great. The primary question we ask is: What's Keeping You Up at Night Chris provided a list of common issues: How much is enough?

The Growth of Open APIs: More Evidence That Web Services Drive Network Effects

Dion Hinchcliffe's Web 2.0 Blog

A few days ago Amazon Web Services evangelist Jeff Barr released a graph ( Figure 1 below ) showing the growth of the bandwidth used by their global Web sites versus the bandwidth being consumed by their Web services. It's eye opening because of the dramatic growth in bandwidth being consumed by their customers via their various non-visual, data-only Web services.

This is not borne of maliciousness. People on an IT project are not necessarily out to defraud anybody. It may simply be that people incompletely scope the work, make assumptions about skills and capabilities, or are overly optimistic in estimates.

Start-up Advisors

SoCal CTO

Andrew Warner from Mixergy posted - Before Looking for Funding, Get an Advisor. He recommends that early stage companies get input from people who know the funding process, know the vertical, etc. That's great advice. Of course, it's sometimes hard to find advisors. On the flip side, as a person who regularly advises early stage start-ups, I often have a hard time finding interesting start-ups.

I wasn't certain if I had this post in me. My two prior posts about Google Sites were a welcome, and needed diversion. Last week I posted about my own 25th Wedding Anniversary. Given this is a technical blog, I felt it was time to refocus on hard content. God had other plans for me. Wednesday night, my Mom died. Perhaps I can pass along some learnings.

Google Sites. Nice. Not a wiki

elsua: The Knowledge Management Blog

Google has a new service named Google Sites. You can read Google's own announcement , or watch a short video demonstration. In short, this free service allows anyone to create a collaborative web portal. However, although you may give anyone you desire full edit privileges, the service does not act like a wiki (anonymous edit, open invitations to join site, RSS, etc).
