IT organizations are increasingly shifting from project-based organizational structures to product-based methodologies , which involve cross-functional teams. Productmanagers aren’t a new job category by any means, but this shift means that they’re newly prominent and important to many companies’ strategies.
I recommend three primary roles: a productmanager owning the vision, a delivery leader overseeing agile teams and implementation, and a program sponsor. One solution is to assign the responsibility to enterprise architects in a productmanagement capacity.
As project-based business practices give way to product-focused cross-functional teams, the productmanager role is taking on prominence, increasingly attracting interest from job candidates who might otherwise go into IT.
