I did a presentation recently for a graduate class from The Founder Institute around getting online/mobile products out the door. I LOVED it because, the presenting part was over quickly and we got into specific issues that the founders had in terms of getting things built. There are two kinds of advisors that are commonly needed.

There was a lot of passion in the room last week when I presented Working with Developers at the Stubbs Precellerator. I guess it should not be a surprise that Founders have lots of challenges working with developers. But my developers want to go into way too much detail. Let me come back to these at the end of this post.

We currently have cloud vendors that offer end-to-end solutions from the developer experience down to the hardware: What if cloud vendors focus on the lowest layer, and other (pure software) vendors on the layer above? Margins aren't so bad and vendor lock-in is still pretty high. Maybe owning the lowest layer isn't so bad?
Middle managers need strong mentors and a network of colleagues who understand their problems and can offer advice based on their own experience when things get tough, so the manager can learn how to cope, get back on track, and thrive. But it starts with identifying a middle manager who needs an assist and then stepping in to intervene.
One reason CEOs restructure new digital, data, AI, or experience departments with separate C-level leaders is if IT is underperforming and the CIO isn’t driving transformation. Tyler James Johnson, co-founder and CTO of PrivOps, says, “If we’re rebranding, unless we’re also transforming, then all we’re doing is putting lipstick on a pig.”
I did a presentation this week at Coloft that looked at how Non-Technical Founders can go about getting their MVP built. If you are on the lower complexity end, the key is defining small chunks of work that can be done quickly by a developer. Structure development contracts appropriately or directing the in-house team appropriately.
