By all counts, I had the potential to be a great engineer. Ironically, once that changemanagement project was over, I decided I wasn’t doing enough real engineering work, and so I joined another manufacturing company as an industrial engineer. Here I am, eight years after leaving engineering behind.
About 14 years ago, there was a pivotal moment that started my journey to being a change practitioner. At the time, I was the industrial engineeringmanager for a manufacturing company. And I could have easily missed it.
Now it also covers the advanced titles—Staff Engineer for the engineer track and three EngineeringManager titles for the management track. We still need to add Principal Engineer for the engineer track, and specialty skills, but this is enough for a foundation. Verdict: Jury’s still out on this one.
I was originally approached by an engineeringmanager at a company with several hundred engineers and about 45 software teams. The manager was looking for someone to lead a small team. The engineeringmanager found my thoughts about scaling insightful, so he introduced me to his VP of Engineering.

Depending on the size of your organization, your HR department may have changemanagement experts on staff who can help. Organizational leaders often underestimate the importance of changemanagement.
