eYs3D Microelectronics , a fabless design house that focuses on end-to-end software and hardware systems for computer vision technology, has raised a $7 million Series A. Based in Taipei, Taiwan, eYs3D was spun out of Etron , a fabless IC and system-in-package (SiP) design firm, in 2016.

The idea is to take a complex 3D structure and accomplish what it does using a precisely engineered “2D” surface — not actually two-dimensional, of course, but usually a plane with features measured in microns. Back in 2016 I wrote about a NASA project that took inspiration from moth eyes to create a 2D camera of sorts.

Called the 3D Chamber, this chamber is a significant part of the Puffco Peak Pro (this is where the magic happens). Like the name implies, the 3D Chamber heats the material on all sides. The user has to update the firmware of the Peak Pro to use the 3D Chamber. The company sent me a 3D Chamber to try out and I love it.
