As a final test I decided to run it over the Linux kernel which is HUGE – 635,229 commits as of today. Linux also clearly exhibits more of a linear growth pattern. Again, code is available here. The monster repo of them all. Note that most of these repos took at most a few minutes to analyze, using my script. half-life (years).

In its annual open source contributor survey from 2020 , the Linux Foundation and The Laboratory for Innovation Science at Harvard found that more than half of core and frequent contributors to open source projects were financed for their work, either by their current employer or by a third party.

Later on Oracle, a US tech giant acquired Sun Microsystems in 2010, and MySQL is today owned by Oracle. After one month, source and Linux binary got released. They released their first MySQL server on the same date. Another US tech firm named Sun Microsystems took complete ownership once they purchased MySQL AB.
