Nevertheless, the low-level implementation of the early days, circa 2000 – 2010, has been abstracted away. Bad architecture is authoritarian and tries to cram a bunch of one-size-fits-all decision into a big ball of mud. In other words, both the architecture and the teams are loosely coupled.
A couple of things I should add - Greg didnt mention the technical challenges they had (scalable complex matching algorithm) and the issues they had with an initial developer. While we like to talk about how fast technology moves, internet time, and all that, in reality the last major new idea in software architecture was microservices, which dates to roughly 2015. Remember that these “units” are “viewed” by our users, who are largely professional software developers and programmers. What does this mean?
