Many a good enterprise has been blown to pieces by a CEO with either no vision or the wrong vision. These CEOs can often go undiscovered for great lengths of time before their poorly constructed vision bubbles-up to the surface, by which time it is often too late to repair the damage.
So, in today’s post I’ll share two a few tips on deciding which tasks, and to whom, the art of delegation should apply… As a CEO it is critical to develop a keen understanding of your value to the enterprise, and to further develop an awareness of activities that are dilutive to said value.

Is there a point when satisfying the customer is actually harmful to the enterprise, or back to the original question, is the customer always right? How far should a company go to satisfy their clientele or customer base? What is the lost opportunity cost associated with customer churn?
One would hope that the employees would understand and put the needs of the enterprise ahead of their expectation that this year’s bonus should eclipse that of the previous year, but would they? How do the employees feel about this?
If change and innovation weren’t key contributors to sustainable success, and the enterprise could just run on auto-pilot, you could replace the CEO with a General Manager. The fact is that business is not a static endeavor. This isn’t rocket science, rather it’s just plain-old, good leadership.
Furthermore, in well run organizations you can determine which initiatives are most important to the enterprise by examining which leaders are tasked to what initiatives. Great organizations assign their best leaders to the most significant opportunities and/or to correct key shortcomings (see previous post: Resourcing 101 for CEOs ).
Rather than binding the enterprise to a rigid set of static operating principles and procedures, the elasticity and flexibility of a well defined business model allows the organization to influence necessary inflection points and key business drivers in a real-time manner.
It is more critical than ever in today’ economic climate that leadership development be a top priority for CEOs who want to build a thriving enterprise moving forward. When an organization stops learning they begin dying. Remember that leadership is not a spectator sport.
Oh, and by the way…if you’re a CEO you better have a very clear understanding of what your customers are experiencing at every level of interaction across your enterprise. You engage your employees through leadership, coaching and training. Richard Branson is a frequent passenger on Virgin flights.
Great CEOs possess the ability to refine their thinking and leadership skills to reflect the evolving needs of the enterprise and the changing global business climate. Stating that a CEO of a start-up should operate with the same term limit constraints of a CEO of a Fortune 500 company is very unrealistic and dangerous thinking.
They understand how to effectively deploy these highly productive and valuable team members to create tremendous leverage and velocity across the enterprise. As a CEO you can either pit your executives against one another, or have them collaboratively engage in supporting one another for the overall good of the enterprise.
If all enterprises had socially acceptable values and based all behavior on those values, how would that have changed the outcomes of things like, for example, Enron Corporation, Bernard L. Think about that.
It is precisely the dispensing of one-size fits all advice that has allowed the ranks of consultants, coaches, mentors and other professional advisers to swell to historical proportions. After all, if you can apply someone else’s theory in a vacuum it lowers the barrier to entry doesn’t it?
Unless you are a very large enterprise it is unlikely that you have the time, money, staffing, or external professional relationships to execute a brand management strategy such as the one outlined above. The preceding description paints the perfect illustration of why branding is one of my favorite topics…It is complex.
As a CEO Coach I am often asked to provide counsel on the political hot potato de jure, and let me be perfectly clear that it is not only possible, but preferable, to successfully handle highly charged political topics without being politically correct. Yes, Leaders need to be role models for commpassion, mentorship, coaching, etc.
Refusing to surrender, having the ability to make the tough decision, the needed sacrifice, and the focus to place fiduciary obligations above your self interest will allow your company to continue taking ground and will keep the competitive advantage on the side of your enterprise.
