I’ve seen many an executive or consultant attempt to identify leaders with interviews, tests, evaluations, etc., By that I mean practice areas that serve no real purpose other than to generate a revenue stream for a coach or consultant, or justify headcount within a department. only to fail in miserable fashion.
Coach Scott Morrison’s journey as an educator serves as a great lesson for all of us–no matter our profession or path. I’m deeply gratified to hear that my work has served as a confirmation of Coach Morrison’s natural impulses and instincts. My hope is that his story will do the same for you.
Just as a diamond cannot be polished without friction, neither can you fully develop your skills without them being tested by adversity. View setbacks as a challenge to overcome rather than an issue or problem. Use obstacles and failures as an opportunity to polish your skills.
The short answer is yes…There are in fact a great number of tests that can quickly assess leadership ability. Effectiveness should be the litmus test for leadership. link] Jay Young This is a good post and addresses many of the worst characteristics of ineffective leadership. For more check out "Are You Ineffective?"
Nothing will test your metal as CEO more than your ability to make decisions. Knowledge : Knowledge is information that has been refined by analysis such that it has been assimilated, tested and/or validated. That said, nobody is immune to bad decisioning. We have all made bad decisions whether we like to admit it or not.
While this test is not as detailed as more comprehensive assessments, I have nonetheless found it to be fairly thorough. That said, any self exam is only as good as the honesty of those taking the test. If you’re looking to benchmark your leadership ability the following self examination will give you a baseline to build from.
This is so much the case that I have never come across a great leader who has stood the test of time that has not rid themselves of this debilitating habit. I have found that negative self-talk doesn't bode well for anyone, but especially not for leaders. Thanks so much for your astute insights Greg.
Let me be clear that I’m not advocating brand snobbery, just astute brand management based on time tested success principles. Intelligent brands create at least some level of focused planning surrounding the issue of access to prevent overexposure. Once a brand is overexposed it becomes commoditized, diluted, and ultimately.
History is littered with leaders of this ilk have not endured the test of time often. While being motivated solely by conquest may allow you to achieve a stated goal or objective, the cost will be great. As I mentioned earlier, it is always important to remember that leading and being a real leader are not one in the same.
link] mikemyatt Thanks Dan…I thought we were on the same page, but was testing for clarification to be sure…As usual, I find your thinking to be spot-on. That acceptance, by it's very nature, has merit regardless of the thoughts of the 'enlightened' crowd. Oops, I fear spot-on is a buzzword.
In answer to your question, there are any number of diagnostic tests (personality profiles, psychological evaluations, etc.) In addition to testing, developing a solid set of interviewing questions to sniff out any character flaws is also a good idea. admin Hi Ahmad: Thanks for the kind words.
Michael’s track record of leadership has stood the test of time. Additionally, two executive coaches, who have helped provide objective feedback and input. I too believe that my faith informs all I do, including how I coach and teach leadership. Michael Hyatt : Two previous bosses, one positive and one negative.
In the end, I think the test is not as much where they were educated or what was disseminated in the classroom, but rather what is lived out in the hearts and minds of our leaders that ultimately matters. That said, just as is the case with secular universities there is also room for improvement.
All three of these individuals are published authors, speakers, and advisors on the topic of leadership that have stood the test of time. I do this through my work as an executive coach, teaching as a leadership educator, and writing my columns and books. Maxwell ( @johncmaxwell ).
An unprepared CEO is a CEO who will not endure the test of time. If you’re going to get beat-up by your board, it’s better to have it happen in private rather than on center stage where the beating can not only be more severe, but where the results may also be recorded in the minutes.

Don’t fall into the trap of resting on laurels and assuming that a great product or niche market will endure the test of time without constant attention to the shifting needs of a fluid marketplace. Even category dominant brands can fall into rapid decline as obsolescence sets in.

We’re going to get very personal today – How’s your family life? If the next sentence seems a little preachy, it’s meant to be.
The litmus test for blogging is, and always will be, does your blog add value, does it make a difference, and do people benefit from the opinions espoused? The noise in this space is simply deafening…As Miller so aptly stated in his post, “The good stuff lasts, the chaff separates from the wheat, the cream rises to the top, all that.”
I can tell you from personal experience, few things test your metal as a leader more than leading a turnaround. Rebel Brown : I see myself as a coach and facilitator. Mike Myatt: What do you see as the primary role of a leader? After working through over 100 client scenarios there’s not much I haven’t seen.
" <– that's my test of a great idea. Dan [link] Liz Strauss Mike, You're always pointing to game changing ideas and true insights into how leadership can affect growth. I particularly like your sensible and simple "realistic, cost effective, quick to adopt, and fast to implement."
Have you noticed that over the past few years the use of the word ‘coaching’ has been increasing within the business environment? Was it that coaching really works or was it that companies started to outsource their training departments and as a consequence it was more cost effective to ‘train’ one on one? What started this trend?
There’s a wide variety of help available: occasional mentoring; training; help with process design and implementation; and full-time (or near-full-time) coaching. The most effective help you can get is to hire experienced practitioners to coach each team full-time. The same goes when hiring consultants and coaches.
There is a debate In the global Agile coaching and training community about whether we should focus on the outcomes or efficiency of teams. When Table Tennis is on board, I need to play my shot as well I remember similar piece of advice from my TT coach when he used to say that playing defensive can help you get points but getting a point with your attack/offense will make you more happy and increase your confidence level. with Phil Gerbyshak Management Craft Nicholas Bate NOOP.NL
