As a final test I decided to run it over the Linux kernel which is HUGE – 635,229 commits as of today. Linux also clearly exhibits more of a linear growth pattern. Again, code is available here. The monster repo of them all. Note that most of these repos took at most a few minutes to analyze, using my script. half-life (years).

After one month, source and Linux binary got released. The first version MySQL 1.0 was out only for limited group and then it was followed by the public release. Their initial public release offered just the binary distribution for the Solaris. Around half a dozen of alpha & beta versions of this platform got released.

Case in point, I've been using the TextMate programming editor since it was first created back in 2004. They have clients on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Every Linux system has some version of it installed, so whenever I'm editing files on a remote system, it's with vi mode. That's twenty years now. So we'll see.

With decades of experience as a developer and network engineer, I have seen my own personal progression of preferred workstation operating systems from DOS to Windows 3, to Windows 95, to Amiga, to OS/2, to Windows 7, and finally to Linux and macOS. I’m quite impressed with what I’m seeing as of Windows 10 version 2004.
