Here's one of the best tips I know for writers, which was told to me by Bruce Eckel. One you've got a reasonable draft, read it out loud. By doing this you'll find bits that don't sound right, and need to fix. Interestingly, you don't actually have to vocalize (thus making a noise) but your lips have to move. 1 This advice is for those who, like me, strive to get a conversational tone to their writings.
Modern CIOs are expected to contribute to areas that stretch far beyond the confines of the traditional IT organization. The board might have previously looked to other executives for the lead on strategy, value, and commercial growth, but modern CIOs must step up and take responsibility for areas once assumed by other business leaders. In fact, Gartners 2024 CIO Agenda survey highlights how 80% of CIOs have expanded their role , with 18% leading non-IT functions.
I built a workload using AWS CDK, and the CodePipeline stopped working at the worst moment. It was right at the end of the sprint; we had done multiple deployments before. But at this moment, the moment you might recognize. When this last PR is released, we will have met our deadline! Kaboom, the pipeline stops working, and the reason for the failure is not related to the changes you made.
By Aashish Mehta In todays startup landscape, raising venture capital is often treated as a milestone proof that a company is gaining traction. But after building and exiting multiple ventures, Ive come to see things differently. While I prefer AI native to describe the product development approach centered on AI that were trying to encourage at OReilly, Ive sometimes used the term AI first in my communications with OReilly staff. And so I was alarmed and dismayed to learn that in the press, that term has now come to mean using AI to replace people. Many Silicon Valley investors and entrepreneurs even seem to view putting people out of work as a massive opportunity.

There’s a lot of noise surrounding the ability of AI agents to connect to your tools, systems and data. But building an AI application into a reliable, secure workflow agent isn’t as simple as plugging in an API. As an engineering leader, it can be challenging to make sense of this evolving landscape, but agent tooling provides such high value that it’s critical we figure out how to move forward.
This is a monthly column that runs down five interesting startup funding deals every month that may have flown under the radar. Check out our April entry here. We thought we might be able to write this column and include some startups not related to AI, but that turned out to be too difficult. Every under-the-radar funded company that caught our eye in May relied heavily on artificial intelligence, whether that was to help farms reduce water usage, trucking companies deploy fleets more efficient
The underrated edge of high performers: Writing as a discipline Ive been fortunate to work alongside some of the most capable thinkers, analysts and operators from astrophysics and academia to intelligence teams in national security and product teams in cybersecurity startups. Across these worlds, one lesson has stood out again and again. Its not always the most charismatic or technically brilliant people who succeed.
We are excited to announce the availability of Gemma 3 27B Instruct models through Amazon Bedrock Marketplace and Amazon SageMaker JumpStart. Nearly three years after the release of ChatGPT kicked off a new revolution, consistent AI ROI remains elusive. Just 25% of AI initiatives in recent years have lived up to ROI expectations, according to CEOs surveyed by the IBM Institute for Business Value. Organizations across a wide range of industries are struggling to process massive amounts of unstructured video and audio content to support their core business applications and organizational priorities. Amazon Bedrock Data Automation helps them meet this challenge by streamlining application development and automating workflows that use content from documents, images, audio, and video.
Documents are the backbone of enterprise operations, but they are also a common source of inefficiency. From buried insights to manual handoffs, document-based workflows can quietly stall decision-making and drain resources. For large, complex organizations, legacy systems and siloed processes create friction that AI is uniquely positioned to resolve.
U.S. artificial intelligence startups are gobbling up a large share of funding at all stages. However, the biggest slice of investment is coming at late stage. That was the broad finding from a Crunchbase analysis of funding by stage to companies in AI-related industry categories. Over the past year, nearly half of venture funding went to AI-related enterprises, data indicates.
Harness today revealed it has developed a model context protocol (MCP) server through which it will be able to provide more context to artificial intelligence (AI) tools, agents and platforms that are being used to build software.

Large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized the way we interact with technology, but their widespread adoption has been blocked by high inference latency, limited throughput, and high costs associated with text generation. These inefficiencies are particularly pronounced during high-demand events like Amazon Prime Day, where systems like Rufusthe Amazon AI-powered shopping assistantmust handle massive scale while adhering to strict latency and throughput requirements.
When I began my career as a Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, I witnessed firsthand how policymakers initially approached national security issues related to cyberattacks.
